Favorite Silver bullion coin?
I like Engelhards. They are nice generic 1 oz coins.
Silver Eagle - I don't like. It's 995 fine and I would prefer 999. Also, the diameter is kind of big, I like 38mm vs. 40mm. A-Mark I don't like, it's not shiny and doesn't have a year on it. Other nice things: NORFED - expensive but I got a set at $15/each. Johnson Matthey - A+ Haven't tried Canadian Maples yet but they look promising. |
Re: Favorite Silver bullion coin?
I like the one with the USS Consititution Tall Ship on one side and the Constitutional amendment pertaining to real money on the other.

Re: Favorite Silver bullion coin?
They are hard to find I imagine. What mint makes them?

Re: Favorite Silver bullion coin?
I've got some silver Maples and they are pretty sharp. Have some SAE on order but they haven't arrived yet.

Re: Favorite Silver bullion coin?
Regaring Silver American Eagles:
I get conflicting reports. I have seen it mentioned that the silver Eagle is 995 fine, not 999. For example in this ebay auction, which I know is just FWIW http://cgi.ebay.com/1994-NGC-MS69-Am...QQcmdZViewItem I have also seen it mentioned that it's 999 fine. I just looked at the official brochure and it says 999 fine. |

Additional points Re: Silver Eagles
They are consistently over priced vs. other generic 1 oz rounds. You pay a premium for Eagles. They are nice, but not that nice. I like the Maples more than Eagles. I think if getting a large quantity, I would prefer Englehards instead. ASE are getting collectible in certain years and I don't really care for the numismatics at all. I got an OK deal on Maples but they too cost more than generic rounds. MOst of generic rounds are not worth getting IMO. Engelhards sound like a good choice. |
Re: Favorite Silver bullion coin?

Re: Favorite Silver bullion coin?
SAEs are 0.9993 silver and 0.0007 copper. So, they are 999 fine (Maples are 0.9999 fine). I don't know why there are so many conflicting reports out there. Also, they contain one troy ounce of silver, so they weigh a little more than one troy ounce total.

Re: Favorite Silver bullion coin?
the whole debate makes little sense to me. keep it simple: buy rounds or the coins of the nation in which you live. like if you're a canuck buy maples, if you're an amerikaner buy SAEs. or, buy whatever you like for fun and collection purposes. but for pure accumulation purposes, for the physical hold, it seems little sense to me to have anything besides rounds or the state-sponsored mint coin.

Re: Favorite Silver bullion coin?
I have only a couple of em',but the mexican libertads are as cheap as rounds, with the possible added benefit of being from "our" nation if the amerikan union really happens. Like the look of maples the best.

Re: Favorite Silver bullion coin?
Assuming that you are talking about coins for silver investment, I use the same philosophy that leads me to buy Krugerrands for gold investment. There are two criteria: the coin has to be as universally recognized as possible and it has to be as close to spot as possible. SAE's and Maples fit #1 but not #2.

I wonder why they added copper to it. |
Re: Favorite Silver bullion coin?
Silver American Eagles, why, because that is what I have the most of.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...1850&rd=1&rd=1 They usually go for a few bucks over spot. There was a store selling one of those for $125! I don't think they ever sold it. They are special though! Kind of represent a lot of what we believe in. I came across one at the local dealer and fell in love. Found a guy on Ebay selling rolls and bought 4 = 80 coins. Payed no more than 50 cents over spot. I think these will have good premium. Sort of like numismatic value, but different. |
Re: Favorite Silver bullion coin?
RE: copper in ASE - I suppose that could it be a good thing if it adds durability. I am just surprised that it's such a small and non-standard amount, way less than 1%.
Krugerrands are 22K fine, meaning 11/12 gold and 1/12 or about 7 percent copper. Re 999 fine gold stuff, you cannot breath on it, it's so easy to scratch. Cannot really take out Maples or Nuggets from their protective casings. |
Re: Favorite Silver bullion coin?
I passed out some silver bullion at Xmas for gifts- rounds, SAEs, and Maples-- and the SAE got the best ooohs and aaahs because of lady liberty. what a nice design. much prettier than "the Queen" even though I think the alternating shiny-frosty design of the maple is more attractive

Re: Favorite Silver bullion coin?
silver's doing nicely right now....up on christmas day!
there is a santa! |
Re: Favorite Silver bullion coin?
I like Mexican Libertads. Not because they are fine quality but because they say liberty and independence on the edge, which is what real money means to me.
